When I arrived at Watford I remember having the choice between directing a known classic or a new American play, So Long On Lonely Street. I chose to do the new play because it was fresh, entertaining and touching and spoke to a contemporary audience. I wanted to make a point about what was to come during my tenure at Watford.

Since then the Palace produced over thirty new plays by writers such as Louise Page, Adrian Mitchell, Ranjit Bolt, Edna O’Brian, Michael Frayn, Mary Agnes Donoghue, Sharman Macdonald and Simon Gray. Some of these plays have gone into the West End, and others simply encouraged living writers at a critical point in their creative lives. Perhaps it is that latter achievement which is the most significant.
